When the sun comes out on a cold December day all us garden geezers find time to sit. Photons are our friends, warming our aches and arthritic bones. I got two inches of compost covering the asparagus bed today, and with hay mulch surrounding it, it really looks like a bed. I'm not putting any hay mulch in the pathways like I intended because it's more aesthetically pleasing to sprinkle it on top of the garden waste windrows. Recycling the dead plants on the ground is of optimal benefit to the garden, but looks a bit trashy..

By sprinkling hay on top of them the garden looks neat and tidy. I'm getting the best of both worlds. Weeds in the pathway are probably where they belong. I'll just have to get used to it..

The garden looked bright and cheerful this morning and the sun wasn't even out. I stopped and perused a bit and saw that all the plants are in various shades of green. Crisp and perky after the cold spell. The dark brown mulch contrasts with them giving a finished look. But the real kicker is that the dark green hay mulch is turning bright tan. It's all around the mounds and beds now and is like a highlighter around them..

It's amazing what some reflected light can do to a landscape. It's also amazing how having light colors around you can affect your mood. The winter blahs can be treated with bright light therapy, and bright gardens can cheer us up. All the summer plants have been removed so the open space is inviting. Strolling the pathways without brushing up against wet leaves is nice..

December gardening is the time of year when you start thinking about finding another hobby. Leather working always comes to mind because you can do it indoors next to a roaring fire and out of the rain. Then I go to craft shows and see all the hand made leather products and wonder why? Woodworking sounds awesome. I tried it. It takes dedication to make something worthwhile. December gardening is not for the young..

Too much inactivity. Even I get bored so I'll take the dogs for a walk. Usually by the time I get back I'll have thought of something that needs doing. The primary activity being the hauling of composted stall cleanings around to various nooks and crannies that got missed in November. I keep covering the ground, and the ground keeps eating it up..
