The cauliflower that I overwintered in the greenhouse got to about 4" diameter and then got moldy. Not enough air circulation, like my onions that didn't cure. I've got to pay more attention to air flow. I pulled the cauliflower out and there were a whole bunch more slugs under it. Enough for a stir fry. My lettuce starts would have been gone without Deadline..

The spinach that I transplanted on the other side of the aisle would be gone too because the slugs would have no trouble crossing the fresh shavings. I also direct seeded spinach outside because you can never have too much spinach.I'll use the empty six packs to start another round of lettuce so that when the lettuce in the greenhouse is done the outside lettuce should be ready. Then I'll direct seed lettuce where it will get afternoon shade and eat lettuce all summer long..

I got brussels sprouts, cabbage and more lettuce started in six packs today, and sanitized jumbo packs and trays for watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and zucchini for Tomorrow. It's going to be a busy March with the early spring plantings running into the summer plantings. Our gardening calendars are shifting and we are at the beginning of a learning curve. I don't know when I'll start corn this year..

Beans will depend on the soil temperature. I guess first planting of beets could go in now if your soil isn't too wet. You can transplant out broccoli and cauliflower..

There was enough "ribbit and rubbit " going on down in the pond this morning that if they would stop talking about it, and start doing it, we would have a solution to world food shortages. My parents cooked frog legs once when I was young and we were on vacation. They said the legs would grow back so I wouldn't be upset, but cutting the legs off live frogs is sick, so that did not bode well on my psychy. I spent lots of time after that looking for legless frogs, and getting sadder that I couldn't find any. They also cooked a squirrel that I shot in milk and onions..

Wow was that terrible. Maybe they did it so I wouldn't shoot anymore. It worked..

They are too big to transplant so I will either have to make a new trellis or plant my peas on the fence line. If I had a north side of my garden fence, that wasn't covered in grape vines, this would be fine because the majority of the peas would develop on the south side of the vines, and the deer couldn't eat them.

Bad News On the Home Front Today

The ground has been frozen for a couple weeks and the cats have found easy digging on my compost rich garden mounds. They leave their deposits under a little pile of dirt so I can easily go along and remove them, but it's not a warm fuzzy feeling to add to my spring planting pleasure.

It's Time To Get Your Winter Squash

Acorn, spaghetti, and butternut squash will start to mold if they sit on the damp ground for too long. Cut them from the vines leaving an inch of stem, wipe them down with a 1% bleach solution, and put them in a cool place that doesn't freeze.

Now Is A Good Time To Get Rid of Bermuda Grass

When the soil is soaked down to eight inches or so you have better luck with not breaking off the runners as you pull them up. Each runner has a tuft of roots every inch along it, and a nub for stem development, and can grow underground for two feet.

Perpetual Spinach

It was 10' tall so I trimmed it way back to 5' because I don't want more shade. It couldn't be in a better spot though because it's close to the eastern fence in an area of ornamental plantings.
