I harvested the last mounds of cantaloupe and honeydew melons today, well worth the mid summer planting. I enjoyed wrapping the vines around the artichoke plants more than hauling the wheelbarrow full of melons up to the house. (Make you jealous?). I developed a melon a day habit this summer, decadent I know..

The watermelons are huge but we have a 10° temperature drop coming in and a 40% chance of rain so they might not make it. I didn't plant any pumpkins this year so if the watermelons don't ripen I'll just carve them into jack- o -lanterns ..

Back when I was a young whippersnapper I found a bunch of black and orange striped alligator like insects on my corn, and thought they were eating it, so I killed them all. Turns out they were Lady Beatle larva that had hatched in the garden to eat aphids. Dumb move. Last year I found a slew of maggot like insects in my compost pile and killed them all..

Found out they were a predator fly that was beneficial to the garden. Those two slaughters were 40 years apart. I can tell you to find out what it is before you kill it, but you won't listen..

Gardeners eat healthy food almost year round. When we have a lot of something, like Kale in the Winter, we eat lots of Kale. I'd never buy myself five tomatoes a day, but in the summer, that's how many I eat. They're free..

And lettuce was so plentiful this year that putting it on sandwiches and using it in salads wasn't enough to keep up, so I got in the habit of folding a leaf over, rolling it up and eating it like a fruit roll up. I really enjoyed it that way, and now that it's on the wane, I've switched to using Swiss chard which should be harvestable for another month or so..
