We had another frost this morning and patchy frost is expected tomorrow morning. That makes 6 frosts in April, so I guess the traditional planting out time of Mothers day will be true again this year. I put a box fan on one side of the garden, and an occilating fan on the other side, and everything seems to be ok. A neighbor about a half mile east of us got a wind turbine. I don't know what crops he's protecting, but every morning at 6:00 when we open the sliding glass door in the bedroom to let the cats out, it will be running if there is going to be a frost..

It's my cue to go turn on the garden fans. Very convenient. I'll have to thank him one day..

Tomorrow is our traditional "average last date of frost" so I will be starting over with my melon. The mounds have warmed under the plastic and the soil is drying out. I will direct seed three per mound. I thought that when the USDA changed our heartiness zone to 8b, and our last date of frost was pushed back a month a half, that we got an extra month and a half of spring gardening..

Spring gardening yes but not summer gardening. I did get an early planting of corn, and I have a zucchini with blossoms on it, but melon are the most sensitive to cold, wet soil. Heating the soil up with plastic only works if you have enough sunshine..

The artichokes on the wet side of the garden got narrow leafed and pale green this winter. Now I know that the roots were drowning. They are on the same high ground that the peas were planted in that didn't come up. There must be a clay basin under it that doesn't let the water flow through. The leaves are widening out now, and getting darker, and there are small artichokes forming..

The four other plants in the garden don't have artichokes on them yet, so stress might produce an early harvest. One of the plants in the middle of the garden is 4' tall and has a diameter of 6' but no artichokes on it. All show and no globe..
