I only had 15 corn seeds left from my seventh planting and didn't know if I should bother planting them. I checked Frostdate and found that an August planting can yield you a crop so in they went. I know I'm pushing it for mid August planting but I don't really need the ears because my wife's horses get the stalks as treats. I became aware of how important nitrogen is for corn plants this year by planting a patch where there was no compost next to a patch of ground that had been composted. The un composted patch was about three feet tall and pale yellow next to the composted patch that was six feet tall and dark green. If you don't compost you will have to fertilize..

The ears were smaller on the corn growing in the nitrogen poor soil so for you dieters out there...forget the fertilizer..
