All my garden pathways are getting a thick coating of leaves. I'm finding leaves everywhere this year. Free mulch, so everywhere I go I'm taking inventory. The crunch as I walk through the garden is a rewarding sound, and it looks like I'm putting the finishing touches on winterizing it, but actually it's just the beginning. As the broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts get pulled up I'll be carting in compost to cover their bare spots..
The mulch around the artichokes is already diminished so I'm putting leaves under them now. I don't know if I can wait until Christmas for my straw bales because my soil has developed an insatiable appetite. The more you mulch the more the microbes multiply and the more quickly it disappears, but man you otta see my earthworms..

I've been spending a little time each day gathering up leaves, and rather than putting them all in the garden at once, I have started storing them for use in the spring. I used to get them already bagged when our town had a curbside leaf pick up day. They store well in the bags..
I also had people with large lawns call me when they mowed, so I could come pick up their lawn clippings. I could custom mix my compost all summer by using the fall leaves in bags, and the fresh lawn clippings..
