I guess the last direct seeding I'll do this fall will be lettuce. The spinach came up so I've got two boards available. I would be wise to pick up a couple six packs from our local gardening center, but I've still got half a pack of lettuce seeds. Two of our local gardening guru's suggest it's time to plant a fall garden because they don't consider first frost to be the end of gardening season. They are lower in elevation than I am and get a series of mild frosts to acclimate their crops..
What doesn't harvest in fall can overwinter. All of the Cole crops are available as starts now, and will take very little effort. It's also a good time to plant a new lawn because the soil is warm enough to germinate the seeds quickly and the dew keeps them wet..

Last night's thundershowers obliterated the animal tracks that had accumulated on the dusty walking trails, like wiping a chalkboard clean, and now we have a fresh palette to reveal the night stalkers passings. If you ever think you've discovered a three toed deer, it's probably because it's rear hoof landed in a front print. That was my conclusion anyway. The showers freshened up the garden nicely..
I didn't even need to water my transplants. It was not enough water to alter the deep watering cycle, and reminded me to soak the asparagus bed. It's always difficult to remember that they need a good soaking because they grow so well with just the water available to them from the surrounding ground..

Summer thundershowers change the fragrance of the land. You can now smell the gravel driveway, the sidewalk and the asphalt. The dry grass has an unnoticed before aroma of its own, and the dirt pathways contribute humidity that we can smell too. The leaves of the trees and bushes have been washed, and reflect more light, which gives a crisp clear look to the environment. Bird shadows have increased because birds seem to get busy after a rain. Especially the red headed woodpeckers..
They get energetic in these cooler temps and scramble from tree to tree in search of food. The scrub J's are carrying acorns around looking for a hard spot to crack them on. Hummingbirds have come back to the garden and battle the bumblebees for access to the hollyhock flowers. The poor little honeybees get pushed out of the way..
