I've started harvesting the fall broccoli but the heads are really small. My son read that they need potassium to develop their heads, and tried half his plants with a supplement, and half without. Sure enough the potassium supplemented broccoli formed larger heads than the others. I've been under the impression that a soil rich in compost would have all the nutrients that plants need to be healthy and prosperous..
I found out that it's not true for nitrogen which I've had to supply through fish emulsion, so the plants are huge. It may be true for potassium too. We'll find out come spring time..

Unlike the broccoli, the cauliflower is coming in with large 8" heads. It's strange that they don't need the same amount of potassium, since they seem to have the same type of heads. They are just in time to replace our daily corn on the cob habit..
My last planting of corn is not going to make it to our table, but will help eliminate the long faces of our equine companions. They give me lots of s**t, but my garden loves 'em..

I caught another possum in the garden trap. What a busy garden it is at night. I keep thinking it's time to put the trap back in the shed, but maybe it should stay in the garden all winter..
I'll call it garden art..
