Started weeding the first corn patch today. I'll probably plant it April 15th like I used to do before our zone change. I'm going to slide everything back because climate change is causing unpredictable weather. We might be zone 8b on paper, but last spring we were zone 6. I'm not willing to fight against Mother Nature anymore..

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Watching plants thrive is why I garden, not struggling to keep them alive. I also thrive in warm weather. If it's too cold for me out there then it's too cold for my summer plants. I'll start a six pack of zucchini in the next week or two but the melon are going to have to wait until I'm gardening in my shirtsleeves..

Now that the peas and spinach are up, and the coldest nights should be over with, we can go ahead and plant beets, carrots, green onions and lettuce. It's always fun to get some of your lettuce from your local garden center in six packs because it's like getting a jump start to the season. I always direct plant rows too so I can harvest by the handful instead of picking leaf by leaf. The overwintered beets didn't get huge this year as in all past years. They stopped growing at around two inches in diameter..

They weren't woody but did have thick skins. I don't know if it was from perfect timing or climate differences. I'm pretty sure I'll never do it again..
