I've never thought of the microbial action of my garden soil as contributing to global warming by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but a new study indicates that it does. The Arctic and Antarctic soils are heating up due to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere creating a greenhouse like effect and raising the temperature. The microbes in the soil then increase their activities releasing more carbon dioxide. Sound ominous to me..
A vicious cycle. We should probably stop burning things and plant los of trees..

Some of the blackberry bushes look like they are getting decorated for Christmas. Their leaves are turning various shades of yellow, gold, orange, red, cranberry and purple. A very colorful addition to a gray, tan and green winter landscape. There is cauliflower, broccoli, Swiss chard, cabbage, kale and beets in the fridge and a predicted cold front coming in with our first snow..
The garden is opening up as I take more and more dead stuff out and looks brighter and cleaner now. As I walk by some empty rows with fine tilthy soil I feel like running my finger along it and sprinkling in some lettuce seeds. I think I've got the gardening bug..
