My garden mulch was all messed up this morning and there was a pile of berry filled poop on a flat decorative rock. Before I could get angry I realized how fortunate I am to be able to live where wild animals dwell. I saw a cougar down by the pond awhile back, a red fox in the woods, a bobcat in the creek bed, and a coyote on the hill..

If I could just introduce them to my garden raiders my problem would be solved. Maybe I should prop the garden gate open for a few nights..

September is definitely a transition month. Cold mornings like October and warm afternoons like August. The light is changing and you detect more yellows in your environment. There is a slight nostalgia creeping in. Summers are fun..

Winters are tolerated. It's probably time to pull up the cucumber vines, but we don't really want to. The leaves are getting brown and gold but pulling them up kinda admits the fun is done..

This is the time of year when your compost pile is getting out of control. You keep throwing stuff on it that rolls right off. If you haven't turned it a couple of times it's really just a heap. I've got pallets on three sides of mine so it looks like a compost pile, but it's a heap. I've started hand shredding plants to use as mulch instead of throwing them on the pile because turning it stinks..

Literally. My pile stinks, but I've gotten used to it like a cat lover can get used to a litter box in the house. The odors remind me how nothing goes to waste in nature. Everything gets eaten by something else until the earths microbes complete the cycle..

It's Time To Get Your Winter Squash

Acorn, spaghetti, and butternut squash will start to mold if they sit on the damp ground for too long. Cut them from the vines leaving an inch of stem, wipe them down with a 1% bleach solution, and put them in a cool place that doesn't freeze.
