I got to pick spinach by the handful today. The Perpetual Spinach that overwintered in the greenhouse has come on like gangbusters and formed bushes full of leaves. The second year may be the best one for them because their root system can out perform last years. I'll have to remember to plant a new batch this fall..

There were several spinach leaf minor flies on the plants and I realized that by keeping the leaves picked off the flies can't get a foothold on the plants. I'll see how much spinach we can eat this summer by staying diligent..

I found three asparagus poking up out of the ground today. It seems a bit early for them and I wouldn't have seen them if I hadn't decided to weed the patch. If you've let your patch go this might be a good time to carefully remove the weeds. I also weeded the patch where the onions will go. I used to plant them in rows but found that their shallow roots required more frequent waterings than the surrounding plants..

Using an orbit type sprinkler in the center of the patch let's me get full coverage by turning up the flow to the size I've planted. Garlic in patches is much easier for me to grow also. These alumes all like a bit of water every few days. They don't need a deep soaking like your tomatoes..
