It's a good time to gather up your Swiss chard seeds before the November rains come. You can strip them right off the stems by the handful. I dry mine in the afternoon sun to get the morning dew to evaporate, otherwise they might mold in storage. My son went gung ho ln seed gathering this year with Swiss chard, hollyhocks, dill, coriander, sunflower, fennel, basil and more. He knows a good value when he sees it..

I've saved broccoli, onion, love-in-a-mist, poppy, kale, and spinach. I even got a batch of asparagus seeds one year. Many gardeners are seed savers because they believe they can get plants that are adapted to their local environment. There are seed saver exchanges online that help people trade what they have for what they want..

Veggie gardeners tend to learn about the murky realm of nutrition because they like being validated for their efforts. There is no doubt in their minds that a plant based diet is healthy for them and the world. They click on health articles as well as gardening ones, and find the interconnectivity rewarding. Especially the gut biome discoveries that are elevating the importance of bacteria in our digestive tract..

It's vast and unfolding, and has an unbefore recognized significance. The gut biome might be responsible for such a diverse array of health issues that it's mind boggling. The similarities with the microbiome complexity of the soil can't go unnoticed because gardeners have been aiding it by introducing organc matter, and both imagining it's beneficial effects, and looking for it in the way the plants respond..

I saw a Bluebird yesterday morning, and two Cooper Hawks, six ducks, a Blue Heron, a Red Headed woodpecker, a Blue Scrub Jay, and two finches, all before breakfast. The morning was for the birds. It behoves us to look aloft from our weed patches, and partake of the entertainment above. The dragonflies are gone but the damselflies are drying the dew from their wings in the morning sun. They seem to prefer the dried leaves on my berms, and move around so much that I think there are lots of them..

The pollinators are busy on the Aster because it is the only game in town. It's as busy as an Irish pub on St Patrick's day. The constant freezes at night have killed the Brussels sprouts but not the whiteflies. I think their tiny brains got frozen and they are going to suck on the dead leaves until they die of malnutrition..
