I think weed barrier fabric may be the gardening trend for the future. No one has time to weed the whole garden, but everyone loves fresh produce. I've been weeding around the plants this year and weedeating the rest. Using fabric would let me retire the weed eater. My son used the fabric this year and has a weed free garden..

He didn't even put mulch down over it and now that the plants are getting tall it looks really good. It's almost formal. If he spray painted it to look like gravel he could enter it in Better Home and Gardens..

I picked five more 4" artichokes yesterday from the plant that yielded nine already. That's amazing. There are some small ones still left on the plant but I think it's done now. I also picked five more 3" chokes from the plant that yielded eleven. There are seven more 2" ones remaining. The other plants have an enormous amount of two inch ones that are opening before they get any larger..

All of the plants have long stalks on them like I've never seen before. I got a 7" cauliflower and four 3" broccoli heads. My broccoli heads are always small and I think I should amend the soil with potassium. All the spinach has bolted so the Bloomsdale got pulled up and the Perpetual got cut off. We should get some fall spinach from the Perpetual..

The heat is upon us already, scorching the fields, and germinating the palest of pink, lavender and violet flowers. They look so delicate and fragile in the tall dry grass. I've already doubled my watering times. Seeing cracks in the ground so early made me realize that putting mulch down now is like putting a band aid on a wound. It stops the bleeding but doesn't replenish the loss of moisture. Deep soaking is now in order for the rest of the summer.
