Global warming has caused our last average date of frost to be moved back to March 15th. We are in zone 8b according to Frostdate.com. My garden almanac that I've made entries in for 20 years is not really outdated, I just have to subtract a month from all my entries. It looks like I'll be starting melon and squash indoors in the middle of February this year..

Sounds risky but I have enough plastic sheets and wire hoops to cover any miscalculations. Covering the ground where they will be planted with plastc for a week before transplanting can heat up the soil enough that they don't stop growing. Maybe the elusive 4th of July tomato is within my sites this year..

I have a ground squirrel eating the broccoli plants that I threw (sheet composted) along the back garden fence and it is totally ignoring the trap with peanut butter inside. I think I'll need to change my idea of sheet composting to include shredding. I've ended up with a 20 yard long compost pile along the fence line full of slugs and mice. I've been spoiled by having stall shavings and horse manure that I can pile up and turn with the tractor..

I end up with black gold, sweet smelling like freshly turned earth. Crumbly and fluffy it's the perfect soil amendment. The compost that I've made by turning garden waste is not a tactile friendly commodity..

You can usually keep the inside of your greenhouse from freezing without using electricity by using water. Water will heat up in the daytime and slowly release the heat at night. A good way to do this is to fill clear litter bottles with water and line them up along the inside perimeter of your greenhouse. If you have enough to do another layer on top it will be like a "wall o water". I've used a 100 watt light bulb at night which I don't consider too expensive..

Prior to that I used an oil heater which is too expensive, but was worth it because "it was fun". I think everyone should experiment with gardening because challenges are rewarding when you're young. Us geezers prefer to garden along with the seasons because nature has taught us to slow down and observe and enjoy the subtle changes that evolve..
