Garlic and Onions

We had a phenomenal garlic harvest this season. I usually relegate them to some patch of ground that I won't be needing in early spring but this year they got prime space in a 2'X10' raised bed. Spaced 3" apart in all directions they All sprouted, formed large bulbs, and cured without molding. I had such a big box of garlic that I thought I wouldn't be planting anymore for a few years. Wrong. My wife started using it in lots of new ways like dicing it into the zucchini or green beans..

Lots of cloves. Our linguini, spaghetti and stroganoff have never been so flavorful. I asked why she didn't do this before and she said that garlic is expensive. The moral of this story is that if you grow a lot of garlic you will find ways to use it, and your pallette will be appreciative..

I went to prep my bulb onions for winter storage today and found that all the doubles had mold. Apparently they didn't get enough air circulation. Doubles can be caused by an inadequately consistent water supply and I had planted them on high ground because I knew they didn't like " wet feet". The water must have run off instead of soaking in..

Live and learn. If I want as successful a crop as my garlic I'll have to plant them in some prime ground, but since i can't taste the difference between a home grown onion and a store bought one, that may not happen..
