Asprin, water, coffee and shade. These are a few of my favorite things. Shade is especially welcome this time of year and I feel guilty for enjoying all were getting from the wild fire smoke. I took the shade cloth off the cabbage patch and they are none the wiser. I weeded a corn patch plot in preparation for the broccoli transplants and didn't even break a sweat. I can't find any place in the garden to water..

All the ground is moist. I sat in the shade and watched a pair of doves mating in the cottonwood trees. When the male hopped off and perched on the branch next to the female she leaned over and pecked at his beak. Was that a kiss? It was definitely a peck on the beak..

There was dew on the grass this morning reminding me that if you are going to plant a new lawn September is the best month to do it. The soil is warm so the seeds germinate quickly, and the morning dew helps keep them moist. The daytime temperature is falling so the sun isn't as scorching on the sprouts. I've seen a thin layer of straw used to cover the seeds and it seems like a great idea. You can apply it evenly and it let's sunlight in so when the seeds germinate they start photosynthesis immediately..

It helps retain moisture in the soil but allows air flow. The warm soil allowed my beets to come up in 4 days as opposed to the 6-10 days on the package. I've learned to flip the boards off the rows of any seeds planted in the Fall in 3 days. It seems like they can grow an inch long under the board overnight if I don't..
